I grew up near the Chesapeake Bay and recall playing barefoot in marsh mud as a child. Many generations of my family have reaped the rewards of the Bay's fishery, but they have witnessed its decline within the past two decades. Among the first generation in my family to go to college, I'm proud to have received my degrees in the field of science. Now I live and work on the coast of Monterey Bay. When I am not teaching at Cal State University, I lean on creativity through popular science writing and digital graphic creation for researchers. Coming from a big family (I am a second generation Mexican), I thrive on community.
